The bike we take for granted
What a great piece of engineering a modern bicycle is:
Frames made of carbon fibre and more commonly aluminium alloys, these offer a light weight with strength aplenty.
Suspension front and back with adjustable springing and damping (even separate adjustment for compression and rebound damping).
Hydraulic brakes which have discs of at least 6" diameter.
Some, if not all of these features can be found on even entry level bicycles, hardtail mountain bikes (which have only front suspension) with an aluminium frame and hydraulic disc brakes can be bought for under £500 and these bikes will even come with other components of decent quality. I would reckon spending at least £300 on an adult bicycle to get a bike that will last and half that on a young kids bike. |

This web site came about because one day, a long time ago, about May I wanted to get a half decent mountain bike tyre, but of course being from Scotland I didn't want to pay half decent prices! I wanted incredibly decent prices.
After trawling through some web sites I made my choice, a brand I trusted, 2.2 inches wide, for £10. Pretty good eh?
I was really pleased I'd managed to grab myself a bargain. But, after ordering said tyre I was looking at other stuff and came across the same tyre but this time you could get 2 for £15, that knocked me down a bit.
Imagine if it was a bike I'd just bought for £1000! (well it would probably be £999 let's be realistic).
I thought it would be good if there was a site that listed loads of cycling offers from the various online and maybe even offline bicycle shops, well here it is. Here's hoping I can do it justice.
Our first foray into Mountain biking was whilst on holiday at the Black Isle, staying at Flowerburn Chalets near Rosemarkie, we discovered that we were only 100m from Learnie Red Rocks MTB Trails, our son had his Buffalo Stampede bike with him so we went and hired his and hers Giant Yukon hardtail mountain bikes.
I started taking Mountain biking a bit more seriously when my son decided that he had enjoyed going to watch the Downhill bikes at Fort William but it would have been better if he could have done a bit of racing! (6 years old at the time).
Along came the SXC, Scottish Crosscountry MTB Racing to the rescue, they have a great primary school kids race series that takes us around Scotland for James to do a bit of XC Racing.
Of course I needed a Mountain bike to join him out in the local woods, Denlethen Woods Laurencekirk, after he'd saved up his pocket money and got himself a brand new shiny blue Specialized Hotrock 20". It was weird what turned up for a bargain price, non other than the Hotrocks big brother, a Specialized Enduro Comp, it needed some work done and it still does, but it's got potential. The adjustments available on the front and back suspension puts a modern motorbike to shame, unfortunately these are some of the items needing attention as they are both leaking slightly.
